What is the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge?
Now in its 12th year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free, global summer reading program designed to keep kids reading throughout the summer months. Kids can log their reading minutes online to earn digital rewards (much like EPIC). The program is both educational and fun, and aims to prevent the effects of the "summer slide" -- the learning losses that can occur during the summer months. Results will be published in The Scholastic Book of World Records 2019 and the top school in each state will be listed. In September, the top schools in each state will receive a celebration kit that comes complete with items to host a school-wide reading celebration.
How do you participate in the 2018 Scholastic Reading Challenge?
1. Each student grades PreK-11 has already been registered for the program. Letters have been sent home that will explain what the reading program entails, as well as username and passwords for your student.
2. Go to https://www.scholastic.com/summer/home/
3. Click on the blue "Student Sign In" button
4. Enter your student(s) username and password.
What kind of features are there when you sign on?
The program officially begins May 7, 2018.
Weekly surprises will be uploaded from Scholastic to entice students to keep signing in and logging their minutes.
There is a timer included when students sign in. Perfect for kids that may not watch the clock or have a stopwatch. Very Handy!!!
My Minutes -- This is probably where you and your student will be spending most of your time. Every week students can make weekly goals as well as an overall summer goal. They DO NOT have to read every day but they need to remember to log their minutes when they do!
** Since the program DOES NOT START UNTIL MAY 7 you may not see a button to input your minutes if you sign in early**
My Prizes -- Some of you may have heard about EPIC from your kids. EPIC is a reading program that rewards kids with small prizes for reading a certain amount of minutes. The Scholastic Summer Reading Program does the same. As students continue to read throughout the summer and log their minutes, they will unlock different prizes (videos, games, etc). In order to unlock all of the prizes, students must read a minimum of 275 minutes (roughly 4 hours in 3 months). If they finish logging in their minutes, they will unlock a Mystery Finale Prize! However, please encourage students to read even if they have received all of their prizes. Remember, the top school with the most minutes read will be the winner in Nebraska! BRAGGING RIGHTS!!
